Ground is Broken for New Funeral Home at Sunset Hill

It is finally happening! After acquiring Sunset Hill Cemetery in 1989, it was the long-range plan of The Herr Family to provide our families with funeral and cemetery services at one location. With the groundbreaking June 23rd, this long-range plan has become a reality. The new facility will provide our families with convenience and a staff of experienced funeral directors. The new Sunset Hill Funeral Home is owned by the Herr Family which has been in business for 100 years. They currently have funeral homes in Collinsville and Caseyville, IL.

Sunset Hill Funeral Home will be approximately 7,000 sq. ft. and was designed by Hurford Architects of Edwardsville. The new funeral home will house funeral facilities, cemetery offices and be available for service organization meetings. It will also display some of Robert Herr’s extensive collection of funeral artifacts. “Our family is very excited to be able to meet the needs and wishes of the Metro Area by providing the areas only locally, family-owned funeral and cemetery combination with the heritage of 5 generations of service and a staff of professionals.” said Robert Herr. Sunset Hill Cemetery is the largest cemetery in Madison County and one of the few cemeteries which allow both upright and flush markers.

The new building due for completion before May of 2005 will feature a covered entry with two parlors, a lounge and an outdoor patio overlooking Serenity Lake and fountain. The new cemetery and funeral home entrance will be located off Fountain Drive in Glen Carbon, IL. The original cemetery office will be renovated to become a multi-purpose building.

Sunset Hill is a full-service cemetery providing in-ground burial, above-ground indoor and outdoor mausoleum, family estate mausoleum, cremation niches both indoor and outdoor, cremation scattering garden and Faithful Friends Pet Garden cemetery.
